Research interests

Dr Gabarrell i Durany, Professor in the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering of UAB (www.uab.cat), is Director of ICTA-UAB (www.icta.cat) and Scientific Coordinator of the SMART-ER in the ECIU University (https://www.eciu.org/). He leads the research group on Industrial Ecology called Sostenipra (www.sostenipra.cat), and the Fertilecity project (www.fertilecity.com). He is an expert in Circular economy, urban agriculture, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Material Flow Analysis (MFA), and waste management. 21 researchers (14 from 2011) have successfully finished and defended a PhD/doctorate thesis under his supervision. In addition to several book chapters, he has more than 150 publications in international journals from 2008. Dr Gabarrell i Durany has also been the Academic Secretary of the UAB Graduate School (2013-2016). Previously, he was the UAB coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Joint European Master programme in Environmental Studies (JEMES)(2007-2010); coordinator of the Chemical Engineering Degree (2010-2013), and member of the Permanent Board (JP) of the CODDIQ (Conferencia de Directores y Decanos de Ingeniería Química), 2012-2014.

Dr Xavier Gabarrell is one of its six guarantors of the ICTA ‘María de Maeztu’ Unit of Excellence 2015 (MDM-2015-0552) and 2020 (CEX2019-000940-M) accredited as by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
