Research interests

In October 1988 I joined the Computer Architecture and Operating Systems Unit of the UAB as a postgraduate student to develop my PhD thesis on tasks scheduling in parallel systems. This research produced 2 papers in indexed journals, 6 publications in international conferences and 2 in national ones.

After presenting my PhD thesis in 1993 and obtaining the category of Profesor Titular, I started a new research line on performance models, analysis and tuning of parallel applications. This research line has been very fruitful and has made it possible to form a research group that has been making progress on the subject with international recognition. This group has developed theoretical performance models, and analysis and tuning tools that have integrated the developed performance models. In all these years, the following results have been achieved:

- 12 PhD theses (7 under my supervision)

- 28 publications in international journals (22 indexed)

- 34 publications in international conferences

- Participation in 3 projects of the European Commission

In 1997 I launched a new line aimed at studying real applications with an impact on society for the application of experience and knowledge in high-performance computing to this field. The field chosen was the simulation of the spread of forest fires and since then I have led this research. The objective has not been limited to reducing the prediction time, but rather the computational capacity has been used to improve the prediction results by means of adjustment procedures of the input parameters with genetic algorithms. More recently, research has evolved to coupling of complementary models, such as the wind field models. This line of research is a clearly interdisciplinary line that has required the group to collaborate with researchers from other fields of science. The results of this line can be summarized as follows:

- 12 doctoral theses (3 under my supervision)

- 44 publications in international journals (28 of which are indexed)

- More than 50 publications in international conferences

- Participation in 2 projects of the European Commission

Both lines of research continue developping with a well-established group, with wide international recognition and a good number of collaborations.

Since 2010, I lead the research group on High Performance Computing Applications to Science and Engineering in the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems at the UAB. This group consists of 4 professors, 6 tenured professors (2 of them with accreditation of University Professor) and between 7 and 10 PhD candidates. This group has already participated in three projects of the State Plan (TIN2011, TIN 2014 and TIN2017), as well as in European projects and other calls.

Concerning future work, both lines of research present many possibilities. The use of new accelerators (GPUs), new processors based on RISC-V and cloud architectures offer a very broad field of research to be able to take advantage of their potential in different applications. The analysis and tuning tools appear as an essential point to achieve the expected performance.
