PhD projects

1. Population genomics of life diversity
- Analyze and represent genome variation and signatures of selection in different species (PopLife project).
- Define parameters that measure the adaptive potential of a genome.

2. Human population genomics
- Test whether human adaptation events have occurred either steadily or in burst periods along our evolutionary history.
- Functionally characterize candidate regions and genetic variants under selection.

3. Population genomics and multiomics
- Disentangle the complex relationship between 3D chromosome folding, nucleotide variation, and adaptation.

Personal profile

Research interests

Dr. Sònia Casillas is associate professor at the Department of Genetics and Microbiology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She has 20+ years of research experience in the analysis of genetic diversity. She has stayed at the University of Manchester (2006) and the University of Washington (2011), and she has been responsible for the scientific direction of the UAB Bioinformatics Platform between 2006 and 2010. She is now interested in the study of human genetic adaptation and in the integration of population genomics data with other omics layers. She teaches Genomics and Bioinformatics in diverse BSc and MSc study programs of the UAB, leads teaching innovation and citizen science projects and is vice-dean for Students, Employability and Communication at the Faculty of Biosciences of the UAB.
