Research interests

Lecturer at the Department of Sociology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Member of the Education and Work Research Group (GRET) since 1992 and coordinator of the group since 2011. The areas of research he has developed are transition from school to work, secondary education, vocational training, education policy, youth studies.

Since 2006, I have participated in and promoted an international network of comparative studies of young people's educational transitions, in which the International Study of City Youth project has been developed from 2013 to 2019, with the participation of research teams from Australia, the United States, Canada, Norway, Finland, Iceland, France, Poland and Belgium. The comparison has been made between cities, and has coordinated the Spanish team that has analysed the transitions in the city of Barcelona. I have coordinated two national R&D projects (Educational choices and post-compulsory training pathways for young people. International comparative analysis in a context of economic crisis, CSO2013-44540-P; Educational choices and social inequalities in youth biographies: access to university, vocational training itineraries and dropping out of the education system, CSO2016-79945-P), which has covered participation in the international study. Now I am engaged in a international project called The Middle Missing Project, leaded by NIFU, Norway. I did a small research stage in Tampere, Finland, in May 2022, with a research grant funded by the European Consortium for Innovative Universities.

In the last five years, I have published several papers and book chapters, as well as presented communications and papers in national and international conferences. I have also been the researcher coordinator of the GRET in the International Comparative Analysis of Social Inequalities (2016-19) project, an exchange project between researchers from Europe and Latin America, and coordinator of the education and work branch of the project.

I have directed six Ph D students and now I am supervising one more, in the field of vocational training and young people pathways . I also participate in the doctoral programme of the Department of Sociology, in the monitoring committee for doctoral theses registered on the programme. In the area of knowledge transfer, I have signed numerous collaboration contracts with public and private organisations, as well as consultancy collaborations in different institutions. Of particular note are contracts for consulting local institutions to improve guidance and counselling for young people after secondary education, and requests for consulting in the Catalan Parliament in the discussion of the Catalan law on vocational training and in the Council of Europe for the promotion of youth work in Europe. I have participated recently in the research about vulnerable young people pathways sponsored by the non-profit Spanish association of second chance schools. I am the coordinator of the digital skills and employment observatory sponsored by the Iman Foundation. I have been commissioned by Bofill Foundation to make a report on dropout in intermediate vocational training in Catalonia. Also noteworthy is the transfer of research to teaching, in particular to postgraduate teaching, such as the Master's Degree in Initial Training of Secondary School Teachers, and the Inter-University Master's Degree in Youth and Society.
