    Priscila Alvarez-Cueva holds a degree in Social Communication and Advertising from the University of Azuay (Ecuador) and a Master's degree in International Studies on Media, Power and Diversity from Pompeu Fabra University (Spain). She obtained her PhD in Communication from Pompeu Fabra University with a grade of Excellent-Cum Laude and an international distinction. She was a Juan de la Cierva’s postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Information and Audiovisual Media at the University of Barcelona in 2024. She is currently a lecturer profesor at the Audiovisual Comunication and advertising department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

    During her doctoral studies, she was awarded a PIPF1 pre-doctoral contract within the Department of Communication. Her thesis is entitled: ‘Mainstream music in the postmodern era: Analysis of sexuality, well-being and racialisation’ and offers a critical analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, of the representations in the most listened to music videos in Spain, problematising them from a gender perspective. Her findings and contributions include the systematisation of content analysis for music and cultural studies, notably the classification of Western gender stereotypes and the subject/object analysis model, and the characteristics of moderate sexuality/sensuality, all based on racialisation.

    She completed two pre-doctoral research stays, the first at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Porto, between January and April 2020, and the second at the School of Mass Communication Research at KU Leuven, between February and May 2022. Priscila has published more than a dozen scientific articles, book chapters and papers, some of them in high-impact journals such as Sexuality & Culture (Q1 in gender studies); Sex Roles (Q1 in cultural studies); Cogent Arts & Humanities (Q1 in cultural studies); El Profesional de la Información (Q1 in communication and cultural studies); Catalan Journal of Communication and Cultural Studies (Q2 in cultural studies), and Social Inclusion (Q2 in sociology), among others.

    She has participated in the peer review process for scientific journals such as Young, Feminismos and Convergence, and in numerous academic conferences, including those of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMRC, 2021), the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA, 2021) and the International Communication Association (ICA, 2023). She has also been invited to present her work at seminars and conferences at KU Leuven (Belgium), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), the Erasmus Student Network (Spain), and the University of Girona (Spain), among others.

    Priscila has taught the subject ‘Integrated Journalism Workshop’ in the Journalism degree programme (academic years 2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022) together with David Meseguer, under the coordination of Dr Marcel Mauri, at Pompeu Fabra University. During her doctoral studies, she coordinated the academic and knowledge transfer space ‘Comunicació i recerca’ CORE-UPF (2019-2022), and organised academic seminars for undergraduate, master's and doctoral students, in addition to his teaching activity at the UPF Junior Campus ‘The media from a gender perspective’ (summer 2019), aimed at third and fourth year secondary school students, first year sixth form students and intermediate vocational training students. She has also taught the subjects ‘Intercultural Communication’ and ‘Communication, Racialisation and Class’ as part of the Master's Degree in Communication and Diversity Research (University of Barcelona). Her most recent teaching experience was in the subjects ‘Research Methods in Persuasive Communication’ and ‘Technologies and Persuasive Communication’ in the advertising degree programme at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

    She is currently a member of the following research groups: Centre for Research on Information, Communication and Culture (CRICC) at the University of Barcelona, Critical Communication (CRITICC) at Pompeu Fabra University, and the Rotterdam Popular Music Studies (RPMS) research group at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her main research interests are music, cultural studies and communication products from a gender perspective, with an emphasis on intersectionality. However, her areas of research also include interdisciplinary studies, decolonial perspectives and sociology within contemporary cultural production.

    She has participated as a researcher in the following European research projects: ‘Mobile Intimacy’ to investigate the impact of affective-sexual relationships through mobile applications in Spain (2021-2022) and ‘Sociocultural Learning of Youth in Mobile Societies – SLYMS’ which sought to develop, implement and evaluate a sociocultural model of learning among young people in Europe (2018-2021). Moreover, she has participated in the Transmedia Gender & LGBTI+ Literacy (TRANSGELIT) project, R&D&I project funded by MCIN and AEI (Reference: PID2020-115579RA-I00) with Maria-Jose Masanet and Maddalena Fedele as IPs; and the communication project: Fostering Youth Participation in the EE24: Informing, Debating, Acting - ActiveYouth_EE24 (Reference: EP-COMM-SUBV-NAT-E-2023), funded by the European Parliament and led by Mihaela Lenuta Vancea.

    Priscila is currently participating as a researcher in the working group for the following projects: Observatory of Sexualities, Youth and Media: Identifying needs and proposing solutions for young people and professionals in education, health and the media (KALEIDOSCOPE), accepted in the 2023 call for R&D&I projects by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the State Research Agency (Reference: PID2023-146858OB-I00). IP: María José Masanet and Sergio Villanueva. And in the research project: Prevalence of misinformation about sexual and reproductive health (SRH) on social media and its impact on Spanish youth (InfoSexHealth) led by Olatz Larrea (reference PID2022-141576OA-I00 of the National Programme for Social, Economic and Legal Sciences of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the State Research Agency).
