Research interests
I am a human geographer and land systems scientist, with a background in ecology.
Broadly, my work examines the dynamics of land control, dispossession and displacement, and land-use change in regions experiencing the expansion of extractive activities, like large-scale agriculture, renewables ('green' energy frontiers) and mining.
My core research interest lies in understanding the processes by which land control is reconfigured within modern extractive frontiers, and how changes to the norms of access in rural settings in turn affect livelihoods, resource management dynamics, and mobility patterns.
In particular, I am interested in people’s land use/management choices and the implications these choices have within these moments of stark territorial restructuring, as a nexus between social and environmental as well as global and local dynamics.
I approach these questions through interdisciplinary research at the intersection of land system science and critical agrarian studies – connecting these by means of a political ecology lens. My goal in doing so is to advance a view on expanding extractive frontiers which leverages advances in remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and systems theory, but which, importantly, is also grounded by in-depth qualitative analyses.
