Research interests
I hold a Degree in Chemistry (1996), a Master’s Degree in Chemistry (1998), and a PhD in Chemistry (2002) from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). During my doctoral training, I was awarded a pre-doctoral fellowship from the Generalitat de Catalunya, which enabled me to conduct part of my research at the Centre for Materials Research at the University of Kent (United Kingdom). In 2003, I was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship for a postdoctoral stay at Tufts University (Boston, USA). I completed a postdoctoral appointment in the Optical Technologies Group at the University of Zaragoza, a leading group in applied optics. Since 2006, I have been responsible for several research lines within the Sensors and Biosensors Group at UAB, including: (i) microfluidic systems for nanoparticle synthesis and their application in (bio)analytical contexts, (ii) on-line analytical microsystems based on polymers and LTCC for space applications, and (iii) the synthesis and characterization of cyanine compounds for analytical use. I have maintained a long-standing scientific collaboration with Prof. Sergey Miltsov from the Institute of Macromolecular Compounds, Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, Russia). I have participated in 21 publicly funded competitive research projects, including 5 focused on technology transfer in collaboration with industry. I have served as Principal Investigator in 3 national projects, 2 competitive European projects funded by the European Space Agency, and 1 European DOCFAM Plus project. In addition, I have been involved in 13 technology transfer agreements with companies (5 as Principal Investigator), focused on the development of analytical instrumentation for environmental monitoring and, more recently, biomedical applications. These activities have resulted in 2 European patents in collaboration with the companies Devicare S.A. and Medcom Advance S.A. My scientific output comprises 60 publications indexed in JCR and SJR, of which 44 are articles published in high-impact, first-quartile journals in areas such as Analytical Chemistry, Instrumentation, Multidisciplinary Chemistry, and Nanotechnology. I am also the author of a book chapter published by Springer. My publications have received a total of 1007 citations, with an h-index of 22 according to SCOPUS. I have participated in more than 90 national and international conferences, contributing over 30 oral presentations, including 11 invited talks at international meetings. I have also played an active role in scientific organization, serving on the organizing committee of the Transfrontier Meeting on Sensors and Biosensors (TSMB 2002), as Chair of the 2016 edition and Co-Chair of the 2018 edition, as well as of the international conference Ibersensors 2018. Furthermore, I was a member of the executive committee of the prestigious European Conference on Optical Chemical Sensors and Biosensors (Europtrode 2012). I am currently a member of the National Committee of The 30th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences – Micro-Total Analysis Systems (µTAS 2026). My research activity has been recognized with 4 six-year research evaluation periods (sexenios) awarded by AQU Catalunya and the Spanish National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity (CNEAI) covering the period 1999–2024, as well as 3 five-year teaching evaluation periods (quinquenios) awarded by AQU (2006–2024). I have supervised more than 15 experimental Master’s theses and 22 undergraduate final projects, as well as 5 completed PhD theses (with 3 currently in progress). I have also served on the evaluation committees of more than 16 doctoral theses. I have contributed to research evaluation at the international level, acting as a project reviewer for the Ibero-American Programme for Science and Technology for Development (CYTED, 2007) and for the Research Council of Norway (2016). I currently serve as a national research evaluator for the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI, Spain). I obtained the Research Accreditation from AQU in 2013 and the Advanced Research Accreditation in 2018. I was awarded the National Accreditation (ANECA) for the position of Associate Professor in 2015 and for Professor in 2023. Since 2018, I have served as Coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at UAB.
