Personal profile

Research interests

Julian Alonso-Chamarro received his BSc in Chemistry in 1981 and his PhD in Analytical Chemistry in 1987 at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain. Since 2005 he is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry of the UAB and Coordinator of the Group of Sensors and Biosensors at the same University. He is co-author of more than 150 research articles on (bio) chemical sensors, automated continuous flow methods and miniaturized analytical systems. His research interests have included the development of electrochemical and optical (micro)sensors; the synthesis of ionophores and dyes for chemical sensing and the development of automated analytical instrumentation. In recent years, his major efforts have been directed to the setting up of different pioneering microfabrication technologies for microfluidic structures prototyping on polymeric and ceramic substrates (LTCC). These technologies are being used in the development of innovative and miniaturized analytical instrumentation (microTAS, Lab on a CD, POC, disposable (bio)sensors, etc.) for its application in the biomedical, agri-food and environmental areas and aerospace. Likewise, and with the same conceptual base, the development of ceramic microreactors is being addressed to intensify production processes of nanomaterials and high added value (bio) chemical compounds. He has responsible of more than 20 research projects financed through public calls, as well as more than 20 collaboration agreements with private companies (including two contracts with the European Space Agency). More than a half of financial support received comes from private companies in the field of analytical instrumentation and industrial process control mainly from water and agri-food areas. He is also the author of different patents on analytical instrumentation and sensors for biomedical applications and environmental monitoring which has been licensed through technology transfer agreements to different companies. He is evaluator of different Public Research Funding Agencies (ANEP, ACSUCYL, AQUIB, etc.).  From 2019 to 2023, he was member of the ANECA ACADEMIA A3 Accreditation Commission.
