Research interests

I conduct my research at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), specializing in modelling, simulation, and optimisation applied to the industrial sector, with a focus on improving production systems and transport logistics processes. My work addresses complex logistical challenges that are critical to the competitiveness and efficiency of industrial operations.

From 2004 to 2008, I coordinated the LOGISIM Emerging Research Group: Modelling and Simulation of Logistics Systems, which was officially recognized as a consolidated group in 2009 under its current name, Intelligent Transportation Systems Group. Over the years, I have actively participated in numerous industrial engineering and architecture projects, as well as regional, national, and European research initiatives.

A core objective of my research has always been the development of practical, industry-oriented simulation and optimisation methods. These techniques have been successfully transferred to operational tools and products currently used by various companies. Due to industrial confidentiality agreements, some research outcomes could not be disseminated through scientific publications. However, their innovation and impact have been validated and certified by industry partners, including Aslogic (EBT of the UAB and co-founded by me), ENAIRE, AENA, Eurocontrol, Boeing, Nortia, Swissport, ISDEFE, and INTA, among others.

My research has produced decision support tools that integrate optimisation algorithms and causal model analysis to address problems in activity planning and optimal scheduling. These solutions have been implemented across various service sectors, including healthcare, airport operations, air traffic management (ATM), and more recently, unmanned traffic management (UTM).

I have actively contributed to curriculum development in the field of aeronautical and logistics management over the past years. I coordinated the Bachelor in Aeronautical Management program from 2010 to 2017, playing a key role in its academic design and evolution. Additionally, I led the design and implementation of the Master in Aeronautical Management, which I coordinated between 2005 and 2010. I also spearheaded the development of the European Master in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, a joint program implemented with two other European universities. I have coordinated this program since its inception in 2007–2008, under the framework of the Erasmus CD 134522-LLP-1-2007-1-ES-ERASMUS-ECDSP initiative.

General quality indicators of scientific research

Over the past ten years (2014–2024), I have actively participated in several national and European research initiatives. I have been a member of the research team in four national projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN), serving as Principal Investigator (PI) in the two most recent. Additionally, I have led two technology transfer projects and one competitive research project (ARREL), all funded by private entities.

At the international level, I have contributed as a researcher to six European projects under the H2020 and Horizon Europe (HE) frameworks: INTERACTION, PARTAKE, AGENT, EvoATM, NewBITS, and E-Pilots.

In relation to my technology transfer activity with Aslogic, a technology-based spin-off of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), which I co-founded, I have served as a researcher or scientific advisor in 10 H2020/HE projects. These include EuroDRONE, CORUS-XUAM, U-ELCOME, and INTERFACING—the latter of which I coordinated as PI. I also played a key role in designing the technological solutions that enabled Aslogic to successfully compete and win two public tenders in the field of unmanned aviation.

Beyond my published scientific work (detailed in my CV), I have received notable recognition for two contributions awarded Best Paper, in particular for "A Constraint Programming Model with Time Uncertainty for Cooperative Flight Departures", presented at the ATM 2017 Seminar, one of the leading conferences in air traffic management.

I am also the co-founder of two spin-off companies, author of one patent, and holder of three Registered Property Instruments (RPI) currently under industrial exploitation. In addition, I am a member of the LogiSim Technology Transfer Centre, accredited by CIDEM.

Educational management
