Personal profile

Research interests

The research activity has been developed in the Univ. Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB) in the lines of Modeling, Simulation and Optimization applied to the industrial sector in the improvement of logistic processes of production and transport. I have been part of the research team in industrial engineering and architecture projects, National Research projects, regional projects, and European projects. In 2004-08, I was the Coordinator of the Emerging Research Group: LOGISIM: Modelatge i Simulació de Sistemes Logístics (recognized as consolidated since 2009). The simulation and optimization techniques and methods that I’ve developed  during my career have always been oriented to the resolution of real industrial problems related to the field of logistics (highly complex and critical systems for the competitiveness of our industrial sector), having achieved the transfer of knowledge to solutions and products that are currently in exploitation and used by different companies. The industrial confidentiality in both data and results has not allowed in many occasions to assess the innovation of the research results in scientific publications, contributions otherwise certified by the companies where the developed methods have been applied such as AENA, Boeing, Nortia, Swissport, ISDEFE or INTA among others. During last years I’ve been applying the analysis of causal models and the implementation of optimization algorithms for the design of Decision Support Tools for planning and scheduling activities. This knowledge has been applied to service sectors such as healthcare, airport management, ATM and lately UTM. I’ve participated as scientific advisor in two H2020 projects (EuroDRONE and INTERFACING) and also in the design of several commercial applications developed by the Aslogic company, and EBT (technology based company) participated by the UAB.

General quality indicators of scientific research

In the last 10 years (2014-2024) I have participated in several national and European projects. Specifically, I have been a member of the research team in four national projects (MICINN), the last two as principal investigator. Also as PI, I have participated in two transfer projects and one competitive project (ARREL), with private funding in both cases. As for international projects, I have been a researcher in six European H2020/HE projects: INTERACTION, PARTAKE, AGENT, EvoATM, NewBITS, E-Pilots. Regarding my transfer activity related to Aslogic, EBT (technology-based company) participated by the UAB of which I was co-founder, it is worth mentioning my participation as a researcher or scientific advisor of the research team in 10 H2020/HE projects, among which EuroDRONE, CORUS-XUAM and U-elcome and the INTERFACING project of which I was the PI. Also noteworthy is my role in the design of the technological solutions that allowed the company Aslogic to win two public tenders in the field of unmanned aviation.

In addition to the scientific publications listed in my CV, it is worth mentioning the recognition obtained in two of the contributions as ‘best paper award’, especially ‘A Constraint Programming Model with Time Uncertainty for Cooperative Flight Departures’ at the ATM Seminar 2017, one of the most prestigious conferences in the field of air traffic management.

I am co-founder of 2 spin-off companies, author of a patent and three RPI in industrial exploitation and member of a LogiSim Technology Transfer Centre, accredited by CIDEM.

Educational management

I have participated during last years in the curriculum development of  the Aeronautical Management bachelor, which I coordinated between 2010-2017. I have led the design and deployment of the Master in Aeronautical Management (coordinated by me 2005-2010) and the European Master Logistics and Supply Chain Management, jointly implemented with other 2 European universities, coordinated by me since its design stage in the period 2007-08 (Erasmus CD 134522-LLP-1-2007-1-ESERASMUS-ECDSP)
