Research interests

1) Josep Lluís Mateo Dieste obtained his PhD degree in History at the European University Institute of Florence (2002) with a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2003 he received a Reincorporation grant (RED) and since 2005 he has been a professor at the Departament d'Antropologia Social i Cultural, UAB, where he won the position of Associate Professor Serra Húnter in October 2014. He has been coordinator and is a member of the research group AHCISP (Anthropology and History of the Construction of Social and Political Identities), a consolidated SGR group, with several funded projects, on the study of the notions of miscegenation (MEC, HAR-2008-04582), the cross-cultural study of notions of humanity (Comparative Anthropological Study of Notions of Human Being, HAR-2013-40445-P) and cultural areas (Cultural Frontiers in a Global World (FROCGLOB) (HAR2017-86776-P). He has also participated as a member of the projects “Popular revolts from the Mediterranean to Central Asia” (MEC, HAR-2012-34053), “Transnational dynamics and actors in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA): a genealogy of elites and social movements between the local and the global” (HAR2016-77876-P) and “TRANSMENA XXI. Reconfiguring transnational actors and elites in the MENA region. Historical continuity or change in the 21st century” (PID2020-113784GB-I00). In 1996 he was awarded the IX Rogeli Duocastella Prize in Social Sciences, La Caixa Foundation.

His lines of research have focused on the study of stereotypes of Moroccans in Spain; political relations in the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco; mixed relations between Spaniards and Moroccans during the colonial era; traditional medical systems in Morocco; the religious anthropology of possession in Morocco; the transformation of the Muslim religious field during the 20th century; a theoretical project to define historical anthropology; and the end of slavery in Morocco between the 19th and 20th centuries. The main contribution that runs through these works is the theorization and implementation of the method of historical anthropology through ethnography and archival work.

As a result of this research, several books have been published: El “moro” entre los primitivos: el caso del Protectorado Español en Marruecos, Fundación “la Caixa”, 1997; La “hermandad” hispano-marroquí. A mi querido Abdelaziz...de tu Conchita (with N. Muriel; Icaria, 2020). Recordando a las tatas. Mujeres domésticas y esclavitud en Marruecos (Comares, 2021; translation, Brill, 2024). Also several book chapters in prestigious publishers such as Routledge, Bloomsbury, L'Harmattan, CSIC, Edicions Bellaterra. And articles in international and national journals indexed in WOS and SCOPUS, such as Hispania, Historia y Política, Ayer, Disparidades, Revista Internacional de Sociología, Middle Eastern Studies, The Muslim World, Journal of Islamic Studies, Contemporary Islam, The Maghreb Review, Hawwa, Anthropologie et Société, Cahiers d'Études Africaines. He has been a member of scientific committees in congresses (III World Congress of Middle Eastern Studies, 2010; Anthropology in Morocco. Discourses, encounters and networks, 2013) and has organized conferences (Jornada Internacional “Elogi de l'antropologia històrica”, 2014 ; Jornada “Colonialisme i nocions d'humanitat”, 2015; Jornada “Entre ortodòxies i heterodòxies”, 2024).

2) This research has been disseminated to academic and non-academic audiences in several countries (Spain, Morocco, France, Netherlands, Germany, United States), through courses organized by NGOs, book fairs, intercultural meetings and collaboration in documentaries (Ziara, beyond the threshold, S. Gámez, 2013).

3) Since 2009 he has supervised 4 doctoral theses and 22 Master's theses, tutoring visiting post-doc researchers, training researchers in the framework of the local and international Master, PhD courses, and contributing to the consolidation of the lines of work of senior and junior members of the AHCISP group, as member and coordinator. He has been a member of 15 doctoral thesis tribunals.
