Research interests

Jordi Mas received his PhD in biology in 1985 from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. During 1988 and 1989 he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Microbial Ecology group at the Biology Center of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. In 1989 he got a professorship at the Department of Genetics and Microbiology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona where he currently holds a Chair in Microbiology. He has a long-standing experience in Microbial Ecology and Environmental Microbiology with a strong interest in the development of technological tools for the study of microorganisms in the environment. His current research, developed at the border between microbiology, electrochemistry and nanotechnology, includes topics such as microbial fuel cells, microbial respirometry, lab-on-a-chip devices, interactions between nanoparticles and bacteria, as well as the development of hybrid microbe-silicon devices for the detection and quantification of both, microorganisms and toxicity in environmental samples.
