Research interests

After completing the PhD in Economics at the University of Minnesota in 2008, I accepted an assistant professorship at the University Carlos III of Madrid. I joined the Economics Department at the University Autonomous of Barcelona (UAB) in 2012 as visiting professor and the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE) in 2014 as affiliated professor. The Economics Department at the UAB granted me tenure in 2016, and I have a permanent position as associate professor at the UAB since 2021. I also held limited-term appointments at the University New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) as visiting fellow in the first semester of 2012 and the University of Toronto (Canada) in the academic year 2018-19 as visiting associate professor.

I have presented my research in a number of international conferences. To name a few conferences within the last five years, I presented my work at the North American Summer Meeting of the Econometric Society, the Annual Search and Matching Conference, the Society of Economic Dynamics and the meetings of the European Economic Association as well as delivered seminars at e.g. the University of Bristol, the Cleveland Fed, the University of Toronto and the University of Oxford. I have also participated in national research grants and obtained two BSE Seed grants as Principal Investigator. Furthermore, I have contributed to the profession in different ways. First, as referee in several top journals in economics such as Economic Journal, Review of Economic Dynamics, International Economic Review, Journal of the European Economic Association and Review of Economic Studies, but also as an institutional referee for the Chilean and Spanish state research agencies. Second, co-organizing conferences and workshops like the Annual European Search and Matching Conference in 2017 and the ‘The Macroeconomics of the Labor Markets’ workshop at the Barcelona SE Summer Forum annually since 2021. I have also directed a number of master theses, supervised as external reviewer three PhD theses (Adrià Morrón-Salmerón and Christoph Hedtrich at UPF, and Gonzalo Zunino at the UAM), and co-directed three PhD theses: Cecilia Vives at the University Carlos III of Madrid (2013), and Bartosz Korchowiec (2020) and Tommaso Santini (2021) at the UAB.

My research is largely focused on labor markets using state-of-the-art theoretical models supported by empirical work using microeconomic data. From a normative perspective, I have been interested in the optimal design of public provision of insurance in settings in which individuals face income risks and have limited ability to insure those risks away. Specifically, in Worker Turnover and Unemployment Insurance (International Economic Review, 2018), joint work with S. Choi, the optimal tax-and-transfer policy is set in a world in which jobless workers factor in present and future unemployment risks in their job-search strategies. In Unemployment Risks and Intra-Household Insurance (Journal of Economic Theory, 2022), I study the constrained efficient public provision of insurance in a world in which intra-household insurance is provided through a spouse’s labor market income. A positive approach, instead, is taken in Labor Market Equilibrium with Rehiring (International Economic Review, 2013), and On the Effects of Ranking by Unemployment Duration (European Economic Review, 2018), joint with E. Preugschat. In the former, the effects of rehiring prospects on labor market outcomes are analyzed, while in the latter a theory based on the firm’s hiring behavior is proposed to rationalize the observed significant decline of callback rates for an interview and exit rates from unemployment and the mild decline of reemployment wages over unemployment duration.

Regarding my research agenda, I am currently working on two independent research lines. First, in joint work with Virginia Sánchez-Marcos, we want to understand the savings and labor force participation decisions of older individuals in the U.S. when facing health, income and survival risks. This work builds upon some empirical findings we document in Widening Health Gap in the U.S. Labor Force Participation at Older Ages, Cesifo, 2023. Second, Belén Jerez and I examine the links between labor and housing markets over the lifecycle, and how the effects of some inefficiencies in either market are amplified by such links.

Finally, I was granted a Generalitat fellowship, a Ramon Areces Foundation fellowship  and University of Minnesota fellowship to pursue a PhD as well as several teaching recognitions. I have taught undergraduate and graduate (master) courses at Carlos III, UAB, BSE, UNSW and University of Toronto. I have also contributed institutionally as seminar co-organizer during four years at the UAB, as member of the hiring committee in 2017-18, and as a member of the board of the School of Economics and Business in 2019-2022. I am the chair of the Department of Economics and Economic History since November 2023.
