Research interests

I am an Associate Professor of Microbiology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Principal Investigator of the Molecular Genetics and Bacterial Pathogenesis Group at the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB). Since 1989, my research has centered on bacterial molecular genetics, with a strong focus on the mechanisms underlying microbial pathogenesis and antimicrobial resistance. Over the course of my career, I have led or contributed to numerous nationally and internationally funded research projects.

A major component of my work involves elucidating molecular determinants of virulence and drug resistance in *Stenotrophomonas maltophilia*, a multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen of increasing clinical relevance. My group has established a long-term collaboration with Dr. Xavier Daura’s team, integrating experimental microbiology with computational biology. This collaboration began under the EU-funded AntiPathoGN project (FP7), which aimed to identify and characterize pathogenic bacterial proteins as targets for vaccine and drug development.

Our joint efforts have been supported by several competitive grants, including projects focused on proteomics, non-essential biological processes as antimicrobial targets, and quorum-sensing‑mediated regulatory networks (BFU2010‑17199, BIO2015‑66674‑R, PID2019‑111364RB‑I00, PID2023‑150290OB‑I00). In parallel, I have contributed to the development and validation of novel antimicrobial and antibiofilm compounds through collaborations with University College Cork, ICMAB-CSIC, Pulmobiotics, and within the framework of a CaixaImpulse programme.

Our research relies on genomic (functional and comparative) and computational approaches to identify virulence determinants and resistance-associated factors. A key line of work has focused on quorum sensing as a potential target for antivirulence and antibiofilm strategies. These efforts have led to a European patent (EP3294317A1) covering a novel antimicrobial agent with increased efficacy, particularly in combination with colistin.

Overall, my research aims to advance the molecular understanding of pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance and to provide novel targets and strategies for addressing emerging multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.
