Research interests

Hyerim Yoon (South Korea, 1983) is an Assistant Professor (Profesora Lectora) in the Department of Geography at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She holds a PhD in Geography (Cum Laude, International Mention) and has a background in Chemical Engineering (BSc) and Environmental Studies (MSc). She is a human geographer and she teaches courses related to water and resource management, the geography of East Asia, and environmental challenges in East Asia.

More recently, her research has focused on energy and water vulnerability in Mediterranean urban and coastal areas. It has examined hidden aspects of water and energy vulnerability in households’ everyday lives, such as the thermal discomfort experienced by teleworkers and summer energy poverty among vulnerable populations in a tourist town, through a case study of Lloret de Mar. Strongly influenced by urban political ecology, her work carefully analyzes the socio-economic, socio-technological, and socio-political contexts that shape the lived experiences of vulnerable households, with the aim of addressing the deeper roots of the problem. Ultimately, she aspires to contribute to greater inclusiveness and to strengthen vulnerable populations’ capacity to adapt to current and impending crises such as climate change and pandemics.

Another line of her research addresses broader questions of water management, in which she has focused on understanding the hydrosocial cycle of water in the city of Benidorm. This work includes an analysis of the different political interests influencing the choice of water sources. A water–energy nexus framework was applied to understand variations in the electricity costs of water provision.

She works with mixed methodologies based on in-depth and semi-structured interviews, as well as quantitative data analysis. Data collected through these methods are often triangulated with evidence gathered from participatory approaches such as participant observation, action research, and participatory mapping. During her doctoral studies, a close connection with the local social movement Aliança contra la Pobresa Energètica played a pivotal role in advancing her research. She has continued collaborating with the movement on a citizen science project in which data were generated by energy-vulnerable populations to unveil the realities of energy-vulnerable households in Catalonia. The results were shared in technical reports with significant social impact.
