Personal profile

General quality indicators of scientific research

She has participated as a principal investigator in two national projects, one research agreement with a foreing institution and in one European project (H2020) and as a researcher in 28 national (mainly funded by the Spanish Government and the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council) and six international projects (funded by The Wellcome Trust, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, or the European Union, among others). She has also participated in a collaboration agreement between the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council and the UAB. She belongs to a research group funded by the Catalan Government named "Cytogenetic and molecular studies on the effect of ionizing radiation and cancer" (2021SGR00749). Morever, she participated in the Spanish national network of cancer.

She has published 51 peer-reviewed articles, most of them in high-impact international scientific journals, in 14 of them she was first author and in 10, senior author. She has other scientific contributions, such as three book chapters and five dissemination articles. Overall, she has 1679 citations and an h-index of 20. She has been the director of six Ph.D. theses and 21 master's theses. She has made numerous stays abroad, including at the Medical Genetics Dept. of the University of Helsinki and at the University of Colorado in US.

Research interests

Gemma Armengol is a professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, Barcelona, Spain), where she teaches Human Genetics and Cancer Genetics. She obtained her degree in Biology (1994), her M.Sc. in Biological Anthropology (1996) and PhD in Biology at the UAB (2000). During her doctoral thesis, she investigated variations in the number of gene copies in tumors. Later she did a postdoctoral stay during which she devoted herself to the genetic characterization of microorganisms and their biotechnological application. After 5 years abroad, she got a two-year fellowship from Generalitat de Catalonia aimed at promoting the return of doctors working abroad and she resumed research in cancer. After this period, she worked as a laboratory manager in Hospital Vall d’Hebron from Barcelona for one year, doing research on genetic and biochemical alterations of solid tumors. In 2007 she got a position in the UAB as a Lecturer, and three years later she got a permanent position in the same university. She currently holds the position of University Professor at the UAB.

She has extensive experience in the genetic and cytogenetic characterization of cancer, including the detection of gene mutations and copy number alterations in tumoral cells using methodologies such as comparative genomic hybridization, array‑CGH, PCR‑based techniques, and next‑generation sequencing. Her current research focuses on identifying genetic variants associated with cancer susceptibility, treatment response, and patient prognosis, as well as on studying radiosensitivity and the biological effects of ionizing radiation.
