Personal profile

General quality indicators of scientific research

She has participated as a principal investigator in 2 national projects, and in 1 European project (H2020) and as a researcher in 13 national (mainly funded by the Spanish Government) and 5 international projects (funded by The Wellcome Trust, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, or the European Union, among others). She has also participated in a collaboration agreement between the Nuclear Safety Council and the UAB. She belongs to a research group funded by the Catalan Government named "Cytogenetic and molecular studies on the effect of ionizing radiation and cancer" (2014SGR354). Morever, she participated in the Spanish national network of cancer.

She has published 64 articles, most of them in high-impact international scientific journals, in 14 of them she was first author and in 8, senior author. She has other scientific contributions, such as three book chapters and two dissemination articles. Overall, she has 900 citations and an h-index of 16. She has been the director of 4 Ph.D. theses and 15 master's theses. She has made numerous stays abroad, including at the Medical Genetics Dept. of the University of Helsinki and at the University of Colorado in US.

Research interests

Gemma Armengol is a professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, Barcelona, Spain), where she teaches Human Genetics and Cancer Genetics. She obtained her degree in Biology (1994), her M.Sc. in Biological Anthropology (1996) and PhD in Biology at the UAB (2000). During her doctoral thesis, she investigated variations in the number of gene copies in tumors. Later she did a postdoctoral stay during which she devoted herself to the genetic characterization of microorganisms and their biotechnological application. After 5 years abroad, she got a two-year fellowship from Generalitat de Catalonia aimed at promoting the return of doctors working abroad and she resumed research in cancer. After this period, she worked as a laboratory manager in Hospital Vall d’Hebron from Barcelona for one year, doing research on genetic and biochemical alterations of solid tumors. In 2007 she got a position in the UAB as a Lecturer, and three years later she got a permanent position in the same university. She currently holds the position of University Professor at the UAB.

She has expertise on detecting mutations (specifically sequence mutations and changes in the copy number of genes) in tumoral cells by different molecular methodologies: comparative genomic hybridization on metaphases and on microarrays, PCR, quantitative RT-PCR, and next generation sequencing. Nowadays, she is doing research about genetic variants that are related to a higher risk of developing cancer or to a worse prognosis after chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Moreover, recently she has been involved in research about radiosensitivity. Her main interest is to find cancer biomarkers. Recently she published a review on this at a high-impact factor journal (doi: 10.3390/biom12081021).
