Personal profile

Research interests

Esperança Bielsa’s interdisciplinary research draws upon sociology, critical theory and translation studies. Her current research is focused on two areas. The first relates to the political and social dimensions of translation and the theoretical and methodological implications of this research for sociology. The second investigates the culture of authenticity as a structural characteristic of late capitalism, in an attempt to renew a critique of authenticity in the present context.

Recent research dealt with the central significance of translation for an understanding of contemporary cosmopolitanism, developing empirical perspectives on the translation of world literature, social theory and foreign news and on the figure of the cosmopolitan stranger.

Older research empirically investigated the role of translation in the production and circulation of global news and the Latin American urban crónica as a hybrid genre of the contact zone between literature and popular culture.
