Personal profile

Research interests

PhD in Psychology and Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since 1997. He has been awarded four six-year research periods (sexenios) (1994–1999, 2001–2011, 2012–2017, 2018–2023). He is the director of the research group on Eating- and Weight-Related Problems (EWRP) at UAB and a member of the consolidated research group (Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca, AGAUR) 2021 SGR 00714.

He has served as principal investigator of several funded research projects focused on the prevention of EWRP, the study of their risk factors, and, more recently, a pioneering longitudinal research project in Spain examining the impact of weight stigma on adolescents’ well-being and quality of life.

He is the author of more than thirty peer-reviewed articles published in JCR-indexed journals and over one hundred contributions to national and international conferences. Among his most notable contributions are the first prevalence data on obesity-related stigma experiences and internalized stigma in Spanish adolescents and their impact; the publication of the first Spanish-language manual on the conceptual foundations of EWRP prevention; the adaptation and validation for the Spanish population of several key questionnaires used in EWRP research (including measures of eating styles, emotional eating, internalization of beauty ideals, weight-related teasing and its impact, food insecurity, and internalized weight bias); and the co-authorship of one of the few eating disorder prevention programs (MABIC) that has demonstrated long-term effectiveness in reducing EWRP risk factors across international efficacy and effectiveness studies.

He has completed research stays at the University of the West of England (Bristol, UK, 2018), Leeds Beckett University (Leeds, UK, 2019), and Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (Santiago, Chile, 2022), and has collaborated with internationally renowned experts such as Michael Levine (Kenyon College, USA), Dianne Neumark-Sztainer (University of Minnesota, USA), and Stuart W. Flint (University of Leeds, UK; Office for Health Improvement and Disparities).

More recently, he has initiated an international research network on obesity stigma with researchers from Chile, Mexico, and Brazil. As an expert in the field, he has been a member of the Roundtable for the Prevention of Eating Disorders, coordinated by the Catalan Public Health Agency, since its creation in 2012, contributing to the design of public health policies and interventions.

He has carried out around thirty knowledge transfer activities, including dissemination initiatives and training for healthcare and education professionals on EWRP prevention and weight stigma, its health impact, and how to address it. He has supervised five doctoral theses (with three currently in progress) and more than 30 official Master’s theses. He serves as an evaluator for Spanish National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) and as a reviewer for leading international journals.
