Albert Flotats’ scientific career has been particularly focused on the field of cardiology, but also on oncology, endocrinology, neurosciences, and hybrid imaging. He has participated in 10 competitive research projects with public funding (one as principal investigator). Another indicator of the quality of his research is the collaborations he maintains with numerous prestigious international institutions, as demonstrated by jointly authored publications with their members, as well as the publication of international guidelines and consensus documents. As a result of his scientific activity, he has published 117 articles in research journals indexed in databases, 30 (26%) as first author and 25 (22%) as second/third or last author. He has also published 27 book chapters, 15 (56%) as first author, and more than 340 conference contributions. Fifty-five percent of his published articles appear in first-quartile journals; 13% in the second, 19% in the third, and the remaining 13% in the fourth quartile. Analysis in Web of Science shows an h-index of 27 and a total of 3,187 citations.

Albert Flotats has been the Director of the Nuclear Medicine Department at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Barcelona, Spain) since January 2021. He combines this role with that of Deputy to the Medical Director for Research at the same hospital since February 2022, and with that of Professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB, Barcelona, Spain), Department of Medicine, area of Radiology and Physical Medicine, Sant Pau Teaching Unit, since May 2023.

He completed his degree in Medicine and Surgery at the UAB (1984–1990), and his specialization in Nuclear Medicine (MIR competitive exam) at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (1995–1998). Since then, he has carried out his clinical, research, and teaching activities in the Nuclear Medicine Department of the same hospital, its Research Institute, and the UAB. In September 2004, he obtained the European Fellowship in Nuclear Medicine Certificate (European Board of Nuclear Medicine). He completed his doctoral studies in the Department of Medicine at the UAB. Upon completion, he undertook a research stay at the Molecular Cardiology Center of Drexel University College of Medicine (Philadelphia, October 2002). In June 2008, he defended his doctoral thesis entitled Cardiac involvement in infection by human immunodeficiency virus type 1, obtaining the highest distinction of “excellent cum laude.” He subsequently carried out further research stays at leading centers in the United States, deepening his knowledge in oncology and cardiology: University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, February 2009) and Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, August–October 2010). In 2017, he obtained a Master’s degree in Healthcare Institution Management from UAB–Fundació Doctor Robert.

He has supervised one research project and one doctoral thesis. He has been an organizer and instructor of courses of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) in Vienna (2006, 2007, and 2008) and was a member of the European School of Multimodality Imaging and Therapy (ESMIT, March 2017 – December 2021). He has also collaborated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in scientific outreach, participating in workshops and courses in countries such as Cuba and Mexico, and serving as a Consultant in the Division of Human Health, Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging Section.

He has attended 137 courses and seminars (84 national, 53 international) and has delivered 33 courses (22 national—13 at doctoral level—and 11 international). He has also participated in various doctoral thesis committees (2 international), served on 5 organizing committees of scientific events (3 national and 2 international), and on 11 scientific committees (5 national and 6 international). He has given 33 invited lectures (5 national and 28 international) and chaired 27 sessions at prestigious congresses and scientific meetings (3 national and 24 international).

He is a member of the editorial board of 6 indexed scientific journals. In addition, he has served as an invited reviewer for 32 other indexed journals, with 269 certified reviews at https://www.webofscience.com/wos/author/record/687703. He was also editor of the monograph Symposium on myocardial perfusion imaging in acute coronary syndromes (Nucl Med Commun, October 2003; 24(10)).

He served as Secretary of the European Cardiovascular Committee of the EANM (November 2002 – September 2010) and President of this body (October 2010 – December 2012). He was also a member of the European Council of Nuclear Cardiology (ECNC) from 2007 to 2012, serving as its Co-President from October 2010 to December 2012. At the local level, within the Catalan Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SCMNIM), he served as Treasurer (January 2008 – December 2009), Secretary (January 2010 – December 2011), Vice President (January 2016 – December 2017), and President (January 2018 – December 2019).

From January 2022 to June 2024, he participated in a 30-month ERASMUS+ project entitled RLT Academy, aimed at launching a blended, multidisciplinary, and transnational educational program for healthcare professionals on the use of radioligand therapies in cancer treatment.
