The LREC was created in 2005, it is recognized as Investigation Group of the university (code 1493) and Services Supplier Laboratory (LPS). The laboratory was created with the aim to collaborate with the international organizations for standardization in the development of reference measurement procedures and enzymes reference materials in the field of clinical laboratories. In 2008, the LREC was accredited by the Spanish accreditation body (Entidad Nacional de Acreditación, ENAC) according to the International Standards ISO/IEC 17025 "General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories" and ISO 15195 "Laboratory medicine. Requirements for reference measurement laboratories" (195/LC10.141). The LREC is the only laboratory in Spain with an accreditation as a reference laboratory and one of the firsts in Europe. Since 2009, the LREC is a member of the network of reference laboratories of the Joint Committee for Traceability in Laboratory Medicine (JCTLM). The committee was created to help the manufacturers of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) industry to meet the requirements to the European Directive 98/79/CE on in vitro diagnostic medical devices.
