BRAVE neix de la unió de dos grups SGR consolidats amb activitats científiques complementàries en l’àmbit de l’economia circular, centrades en enfocaments biotecnològics i en l’ús de nanomaterials. Aquestes abasten processos de valorització d’efluents residuals com el compostatge, la digestió anaeròbia o la fermentació en estat sòlid per la obtenció de bioproductes; processos de bioremediació d’aigües subterrànies contaminades, incloent disseny de tractaments in situ per a la degradació biològica de compostos orgànics halogenats i processos no convencionals per al tractament d'aigües residuals basats en fongs i algues per a l'eliminació de pesticides i contaminants emergents; i aplicacions ambientals de la nanotecnologia, incloent eliminació de contaminants de l'aigua, conversió catalítica de gasos i millora de bioprocessos. BRAVE treballa amb una visió sistèmica per reduir l’impacte ambiental dels processos desenvolupats, promoure la circularitat i avaluar el rendiment tecnoeconòmic.

- Research lines:
- Traditional and advanced valorisation processes for organic wastes and effluents: composting, anaerobic digestion and solid-state fermentation for marketable products.
- Groundwater bioremediation: Design of in-situ treatments for biological degradation of halogenated organic compounds
- Nanotechnology for environmental processes: pollutants remotion from water, catalytic conversion of gases (e.g. CO2 to methanol), improving anaerobic digestion and biodegradation of halogenated organic compounds
- Non-conventional processes for wastewater treatment: bioreactors with fungi and algae-based systems for removal pesticides and emerging contaminants (plasticizers, flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, etc.)
- Circular Economy and environmental impact: a systemic view of the different processes developed within the research group to reduce its environmental impact, promote circularity, and evaluate its techno-economic performance.
