Constituït l'any 1993, el GEXEL està adscrit al Departament de Filologia Espanyola de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona i, des del 2002, forma part del Centre d'Estudis sobre les Dictadures i Democràcies (CEDID) de la UAB. Durant els seus 29 anys d'existència, el GEXEL ha tingut com a objectiu prioritari i urgent la reconstrucció de la memòria històrica, cultural i literària de l'exili republicà de 1939, centrada en la literatura castellana tot integrant,però,les quatre llengües de l’Estat, molt especialment la catalana. Amb la seva tasca ha contribuït a la recuperació del patrimoni literari i cultural dels escriptors exiliats, de les seves biografies, obres i projectes, condemnats a l'oblit per la política franquista, i què són encara avui dia ignorats i pendents d’una recuperació científicament objectiva i històricament justa. Per tant, el GEXEL ha afavorit la incorporació d’aquest patrimoni imprescindible a les entitats i discursos acadèmics, socials, polítics i institucionals.
