l GELCC va ser reconegut en la primera convocatòria SGR, encara que s'havia constituït molt abans (el 1987 es va fundar la base de dades de llengua i literatura catalanes Traces). N'han estat coordinadors Jordi Castellanos (fins al 2012) i Jaume Aulet (des d'aleshores fins al 2016).
Interdisciplinàriament i combinant diverses metodologies, estudia la literatura catalana del segle XIX al present: el context històric, els moviments, les relacions amb altres literatures, les institucions, els grups, els autors, els certàmens, els gèneres, les arts escèniques, les obres, els temes, els recursos retòrics, els llenguatges, les publicacions, la projecció social... La contemporaneïtat no n'és solament un indicador cronològic, sinó també un identificador temàtic, vinculat a la modernitat.
