El Grup de Lingüística Teòrica va formar-se a començament dels anys vuitanta i té per objectiu l’estudi del llenguatge i de les llengües naturals des d’una perspectiva teòrica i experimental. La seva àrea d’investigació és la teoria gramatical en un sentit ampli del terme i l’equip de lingüistes que el constitueix fa recerca en camps que inclouen sintaxi, semàntica, fonologia, morfologia, lexicologia, pragmàtica, adquisició del llenguatge i variació diacrònica. Els resultats de recerca del GLT contribueixen a entendre millor com s’estructuren les llengües naturals i com són processades pels éssers humans. Les activitats de recerca s’orienten fonamentalment a l’estudi de les propietats universals del llenguatge i a la identificació de patrons de microvariació entre les llengües naturals, amb una atenció especial a l’anàlisi gramatical de les llengües romàniques. De manera transversal, el grup compta amb especialistes en biolingüística, adquisició i patologies del llenguatge.
