El Departament d'Arquitectura de Computadors i Sistemes Operatius té com a finalitat promoure i organitzar la docència i la recerca. Com a unitat bàsica de recerca, promou i dóna suport a les activitats i iniciatives de recerca i transferència de coneixements del seu personal acadèmic.
En l'àmbit de la docència, coordina els ensenyaments de l'àrea de coneixement d'Arquitectura i Tecnologia de Computadors, en particular de les especialitats d'Estructura de Computadors, Arquitectura de Computadors, Sistemes Operatius, Processament Paral·lel i Distribuït, i Processament d'Altes Prestacions i les seves aplicacions, en tots els centres de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, i organitza i desenvolupa programes i estudis de doctorat i de postgrau.
La recerca està orientada al tema del processament paral·lel, cobrint des de l'arquitectura, tant al nivell del processador com del multiprocessador, fins a les aplicacions en Ciència Computational, i des dels entorns de desenvolupament i avaluació d'aplicacions, fins a les estratègies i eines per a la gestió de diversos tipus de sistemes paral·lels/distribuïts (Cluster Computing & Cloud Computing).
