The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was created, by agreement of the Governing Board of the UAB, on September 27th, 1985. Currently, the Department embraces a hundred of investigators with a PhD degree organized around 13 Consolidated Groups recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya (SGRs), more than one hundred PhD students, and Administration and Services Personnel (PAS). The main objectives of the Department are the training of pre- and postgraduate students, the training of research staff and the development of basic and applied research in the field of Biotechnology and Biomedicine.
 
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is an inter-facultative department; It is made up of 4 Departmental Units located in 3 Schools within the Bellaterra campus: the Bioscience Unit, located in the School of Biosciences, the Veterinary Unit located in the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Units of Biophysics and Medicine that are located in the School of Medicine. It also includes teaching staff in 2 hospital teaching units: one at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital and the other at the Sant Pau Hospital, both in Barcelona.
