A partir de la llei de reforma universitària del 1983, l’organització per departaments va constituir aquests com a unitat bàsica de docència i investigació. A la facultat de medicina es van formar els departaments de Medicina i Cirurgia, Farmacologia, Fisiologia i Biologia Cel·lular, Bioquímica i Ciències Morfològiques, però diferents àrees de coneixement van quedar sense possibilitat de constituir un departament propi, ja que no comptaven amb el numero mínim de personal docent requerit.

Entre aquestes àrees estaven les de Medicina Preventiva i Salut Publica, Pediatria i la d’Obstetrícia i Ginecologia. Per tal d’agrupar-les, es va constituir un macro departament el qual s’estructura en les tres àrees de coneixement ja esmentades i en cinc unitats docents : Bellaterra, els hospitals del Mar, Sant Pau, Vall d’Hebron i Germans Trias.
