El Departament de Mitjans, Comunicació i Cultura té com a finalitat organitzar la docència i la recerca en els camps que corresponen a la seva organització.
En l'àmbit de la docència, el Departament és el responsable dels ensenyaments d'aquestes matèries que s'imparteixen en les titulacions organitzades per les diferents facultats de la UAB i, de manera molt especial, en les titulacions de la Facultat de Ciències de la Comunicació. El Departament organitza i desenvolupa ensenyaments de doctorat i postgrau.
Com a unitat bàsica de recerca, promou les iniciatives i les activitats de recerca i transferència de coneixement del seu personal acadèmic i hi dóna suport.
