El Departament de Didàctica de la Llengua i la Literatura, i de les Ciències Socials està format per dues Unitats departamentals, Didàctica de la Llengua i la Literatura i Didàctica de les Ciències Socials.
La seva tasca s’orienta fonamentalment a la formació inicial i permanent de professorat de les etapes d'educació infantil, primària i secundària (obligatòria i postobligatòria) en les àrees de coneixement que té adscrites.
Aquest objectiu és el que guia la seva activitat docent i de recerca, ja que la seva funció és la d'organitzar i desenvolupar la recerca a les àrees abans esmentades i de programar i exercir la docència de les matèries corresponents a la UAB.
La docència del professorat del departament es desenvolupa a les titulacions de grau de mestre; als graus de Logopèdia, d'Educació Social i Pedagogia; als postgraus i màsters professionalitzadors i de recerca; i, al Doctorat en Educació en les línies de recerca pròpies de les dues unitats.
La seva activitat investigadora finançada es vehicula a través de projectes nacionals i internacionals, dels diferents grups de recerca i, també, a partir de diferents convenis de col·laboració amb fundacions, empreses privades i altres instàncies institucionals.
