Des dels seus inicis el Departament s’ha caracteritzat per diferents aspectes: La qualitat de la seva investigació, la interdisciplinarietat i la tasca docent bàsica i aplicada. Així, el Departament és un dels capdavanters de la UAB i de Catalunya en recerca biomèdica en àrees com la neurociència, el càncer, les enfermetats autoimmunes o la biologia de la reproducció. Els seus investigadors treballen en aspectes pluridisciplinars relacionats amb la recerca mèdica i la salut, les nano i biotecnologies o en problemes ambientals humans i animals.
El Departament és un puntal de la UAB en l’àmbit de la formació bàsica dels estudiants de biologia i salut humana i animal. Tots els estudiants d’aquestes àrees reben els ensenyaments bàsics (Fisiologia, Biologia Cel.lular, Histologia, Immunologia) per professors del nostre Departament. No només en aquest àmbit el Departament és actiu sino també és un departament amb una gran participació en la formació especialitzada (4 màsters oficials, 4 estudis de doctorat i multitud de cursos de formació continuada).
Com a característica diferencial, el departament és un clar exemple de multidisciplinarietat, amb docència fonamentalment en tres facultats (Biociències, Medicina i Veterinària) però també en altres (Psicologia, Ciències), i amb 9 espais departamentals en diferents edificis del campus.
Professors, investigadors, tècnics, administratius i becaris, unes 220 persones en l’actualitat, us donen, doncs, la benvinguda i es posen a la vostra disposició per tot allò relacionat amb la formació, la investigació, els serveis i l’assessorament en les àres de la nostra competència.
