Art history and music history have been present at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since its creation. The Department of Art was constituted in 1970, attached to the Faculty of Art and Humanities, and in 1985 the Governing Board of the UAB regulated its legal regime. In 2009 its current name was approved: Department of Art and Musicology.


The purpose of the Department is to promote and organize the teaching and research in the areas of History of Art and Music.
In the field of teaching, it coordinates the teaching of its competence in different faculties and degrees of the UAB, and organizes and develops master and doctoral programs and studies. It also promotes and supports research and knowledge transfer activities of its academic and research staff, publishes the journal Locus Amoenus and collaborates in the publication of the journal Recerca Musicològica.
