Cathecol-based nanostructured functional materials (CATNANOFUN)

Organisation profile

Organisation profile

The CATNANOFUN group joins together two well established groups with expertise in
nanochemistry, functional materials, organic synthesis, and medicinal chemistry.
Our consortium has extensively worked on the preparation and study of functional catecholic
molecules for their polymerization and application as coatings, on the preparation of nanoscale
coordination polymers as nanoplatforms to encapsulate functional molecules and their use as
carriers.
The present project focuses on the development of new applications using catechol-based nanoplatforms. New catechol-based polymers will be designed and studied from different points of
view: they will be used as nanoparticle coatings, both for biological applications and as
materials on their own, and as coatings for nanocarriers. Moreover, the study of the
crosslinking between these polymers should lead to the development of new (bio)adhesives with
applications in various substrates (i.e., inert materials and biological tissues).

Research lines

  • Research lines:
  • Functional coatings based on catechol compounds.
  • Bioinspired adhesives incorporating catechol moieties.
  • Nanoscale coordination polymers (NCPs) for biomedical applications.
  • Synthetic photoswitchable ligands as photomodulators of different receptors

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being
