Resum
Overlapping is a technique of audiovi-sual editing where the sound is intentionally put forward the image for the duration of the change of shots. This procedure is intended to either smooth the transition of the linked sequences or, on the contrary, to highlight the differences between the "shots" in order to provoke the impression of surprise. Despite the frequent application of this procedure in films, there no exists empirical body of research to grasp its functions or effects. In the here presented paper, a study four variables for overlapping construction, and a reception study. The results indicate that the increases of the intensity of sound and image release a feeling of surprise in the receivers, while overlappings with more uniform values of these variables were mostly qualified as not surprising.
