Resum

The Kume Museum of Art (Kume Bijitsukan) opened in Tokyo in 1982, as a tribute to the members of a family, Kume Kunikate and Kume Keiichiro, closely involved in the cultural changes underwent by Japan during the Meiji era (1868-1912). This institution was created with the aim of investigating and divulging the life and work of Kume, father and son. Kume Keiichiro, a prominent Japanese artist and art teacher, trained in Europe, as did many other important figures of the Meiji period. Based on a study of the documentation preserved in the Kume Museum of Art (Tokyo), this paper explores the stay of this young artist in Spain between 1888 and 1889, his residence in Barcelona during the Universal Exhibition and his two trips around the country.
