The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the history of the failed project to create a Catalan School of Oriental Archaeology in Athens. The project was planned and funded by Francesc Cambó in 1928, with the academic support of Pere Bosch Gimpera and Josep Gibert i Buch. The main results of the project were the archaeological excavations in Naxos and, especially, in Shechem under the direction of Gabriel Welter with the support of Gibert. However, several personal, economic and academic problems affecting the men involved in the project led to its failure.
