This paper aims to evaluate the role of frequency in the acquisition of word-initial branching onsets in Catalan, a language that has not been previously studied in this field. The study consists in a corpus analysis of word-initial branching onsets in child-directed-speech, drawn from the CHILDES Romance Corpus, and an elicitation task. The predictions made by a frequency-based account are then compared to the results obtained from the elicitation task of word-initial branching onsets by 2- to 3-year-old monolingual Catalan-speaking children. The analysis shows that the frequency account makes incorrect predictions about the Catalan pattern of phonological acquisition.
