The liberal, radical, socialist and republican revolutionary ideas reached Catalonia through repeated Catalan and Spanish exiles in France, and the attraction of the Italian and French exiled in Barcelona during the Liberal Triennium and throughout the nineteenth century. The article contemplates the different revolutionary periods, the articulation of the various popular movements and their respective political cultures. The utopian socialism left a deep mark on the federal republicanism and the democratic and popular political culture. After the revolutionary emergence of the «Gloriosa» (1868-1873), the monarchist restoration in 1874 failed to stop the momentum of the various republican and anarchist political cultures and their manifestations. The Marseillaise became the quintessential model concerning freedom of the Catalan people throughout the century.
