N2 - The molecular geometry of four series of di-Schiff bases with a middle flexible group: N,N′-di-(4-n-alkoxybenzilidene)-1,2-diaminoethane (I), N,N′-di-(4-n-alkoxy-α-methylbenzilidene)-1,2-diaminoethane (II), N,N′-di-(4-n-alkoxy-2-hydroxybenzilidene)-1,2-diaminoethane (III), N,N′-di-(4-n-alkoxy-2-hydroxy-α-methylbenzilidene)-1,2-diaminoethane (IV), was studied by spectroscopic (1H NMR and UV), empirical (MM2) and semiempirical (MNDO) methods. The compounds derived from aldehyde were liquid crystals, whereas the compounds derived from ketone were not. The relation between structure and mesogenic properties was studied. © 1989.
