Resum

One of the issues missionaries encountered upon their arrival in China was the apparent incompatibility between certain Confucian precepts and the Christian message. With regards to translations of the New Testament, Jn 2:4 and Jn 19:26 stand out as two of the passages most likely to upset local sensibilities due to the fact that Jesus addresses Mary as “woman” as
opposed to “mother”. In this paper I will discuss the solutions that have been proposed to overcome this issue by analyzing a large corpus of Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox translations.
