Resum

This paper estimates the trend in leaving the parental home according to age (from 20 to 35 years), sex, birth-cohort group and «Autonomous Region» of residence. On the one hand, through the proportions of single people that are 35 years of age and still live at their parental home, we estimate the regional prevalence of leaving home and partnership formation. On the other hand, through the mean age of young single people living with their parents, the timing of leaving home and partnership formation is estimated. We defi ne the independence from the parental family as forming a cohabiting relationship, an independent household, or both at the same time. Consequently, somebody has family autonomy if s/he is in one of the following three (co-) residential situations: 1) living with a partner in an autonomous household, 2) living with a partner and with parents, and 3) living neither with a partner nor with parents. Finally, with these indicators (prevalence, timing and types of independence from parental family), we group the different patterns at the Autonomous Region level according to birth-cohort and sex.
