N2 - The Iberian segment of the Hercynian foldbelt is formed by two branches with opposite polarity, and this seems to be generally true all along the belt. These zones were frontal zones of active deposition during the building of the Hercynian chain. The Carboniferous within the Hercynian foldbelt shows the following succesion of facies: 1) condensed, 2) turbiditic (culm=flysch), 3) paralic, and 4) fluviatile and limnic facies. The change from one facies to another is not synchronous in the different zones of the belt.-from Author
