Resum

Biepitaxial YBCO films with a regular array pattern of grain-boundary junctions can be produced in a single deposition step. The procedure relies on using structured eutectic crystals as substrates. These eutectic crystals can be considered as monolithic two-phase composites structured either in the form of alternating parallel lamellae of each phase, or as cylinders of one phase embedded in a crystalline matrix of the other phase. Some of the eutectics show very well-defined atomic scale interfaces. Excellent mechanical properties, light-guiding effects, and anisotropic electrical conduction are a few examples of the unconventional behavior associated with the unique microstructure of these materials.
