Resum

In an increasingly interdependent world, multilateralism is taking on an ever more im-portant role. This explains the academic interest in multilateral institutions as mechanisms of governance meeting the challenges currently on the international agenda, linked to the process of change in the international system. This process of change is based on the emer-gence of new powers and the appearance of new norms, rooted in solidarity. The concepts usually applied to the distribution of power in the international system (polarity) or to the forms of interaction between states (multilateralism) are losing explanatory power or are taking on more complex forms. hence, considering how multilateral institutions adapt to a world of emerging powers is a theoretical and empirical challenge for which answers must be found in three areas: power distribution, interstate cooperation, and the framework of values and ideas.
