Resum

This article focusses on the musical instruments depicted on the backs of the choir stalls formerly located in Girona cathedral. These choir stalls were crafted during the second half of the fourteenth century but partially dismantled in 1937 (during the Spanish Civil War). Fortunately, most of the back panels of the choir stalls were rescued by a private collector and are now preserved at the Fundació Maurí in La Garriga (a town 100 kilometers from Girona). The musical depictions carved on the surviving panels consist of a set of angels (and a devil) playing musical instruments. The peculiarity of the work is the high number of instruments represented (twenty- five), which turns these carvings into a surprising collection of late medieval instru- ments. The article approaches the collection of instruments depicted from the musical point of view (which has not been done so far) and discusses their symbolic meaning.
