Resum

he MIL Cities model was launched by UNESCO in 2018 as an alternative to the demands of society in the information age, focusing on the promotion of Media and Information Literacy (MIL). This concept encompasses actions in physical and digital spaces, with the participation of traditional actors of formal education, including public and private universities, media, artists and other civil society actors. From this perspective, this article presents the MIL University Cities model as a proposal for transforming the university environment in order to train its members and disseminate knowledge in the light of media and information literacy, which is increasingly necessary in the current context. Thus, this study identifies barriers and opportunities for the adoption of the aforementioned framework, taking as its object of study some faculties of the campuses of the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain, both pioneers in the design and implementation of a campus that is committed to the AMI. The methodology adopted includes the use of inductive methods and case studies, inspired by the 20 Cultural Barriers to Communication (CCB) methodology. The results identify eight BCCs at USP and twelve BCCs at UAB, and stress the importance of promoting the application of the model in other social scenarios.
