HIV infection and pregnancy. Update

From publication in 1994, by Connor and cols, of the results of ACTG 076 study, in which they obtained a significant diminution of vertical transmission of HIV by administration of Zidovudine during pregnancy and delibery, we have attended to a dizzy evolution of treatment and management of HIV infected pregnant women. Actually we are in the age of high efficacy antiretroviral therapy (Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy -HAART-), of the practise of elective caesarean section and some other actions, which intention is to diminish vertical transmission of the virus. In majority of cases the procedure is clear, but exist other situations in which dudes are established about different strategies to follow at the end of pregnancy, or at time of starting spontaneous labour. So, in the following we will accomplish a bring up to date of the last knowledge about HIV infection during pregnancy, and strategies to consider to try to reduce possible bad effects of infection in the mother, fetus and newborn.
