Resum

This current work attempts to offer a number of basic lines for what endeavours to be a sociological definition of the concept. It defines civic virtue as causally efficient motivation for public-spirited action. Dispositions and behaviours do not make up civic virtue. Virtuous motivation is oriented towards social justice. This normative element links the concept with the egalitarian-liberal tradition. Certain motivations, like self-interest, are incompatible with civic virtue. Others, like altruism, are compatible with civic virtue but they will only be virtuous if public-spirited. Vicious motivations can give rise to rightful acts but virtuous motivations cannot lead to wrong acts in any case. Finally, correct coordination between institutional design and civic virtue can build a social optimum.
