Resum
During the last few years, the field of gene therapy has provided indisputable evidence of efficacy and safety, with the first gene therapy product gaining market approval in Europe in 2012. As gene therapy finally reaches mature age, the applications of this technology have broadened from monogenic to non-hereditary, complex diseases, such as diabetes. This chapter discusses the potential of this therapeutic strategy for the treatment of type 1 and 2 diabetes, as well as the use of the technology developed in the field to perform proof-of-concept studies in small and large animal models to better understand the pathophysiology of these diseases.
