Resum
River basins are cultural basins: the presence of the river strongly characterises the landscape and connotes various aspects of a common, material and immaterial heritage, to be understood not only as historical assets but also as an opportunity for local development. The European Landscape Convention and the Faro Convention clarify the importance of the role of local communities not only in terms of perception and recognition of this common heritage, but especially in pursuing a horizon of 'sustainable use, human development and quality of life' (art. 1c, Faro Convention). This implies the need for a proactive attitude of heritage communities, which are also called upon to become communities of action. How can such action be catalysed? This contribution reflects moving from an experience conducted in the Simeto River Valley in Sicily.
